Story Slips: Glitches & The Queen's Army by Marissa Meyer

Story Slips is a feature on Dreaming of Books for reviews of short stories and novellas. I don't read too many short stories but every now and then you will see this feature pop up.

Title: Glitches (Lunar Chronicles, #0.5)
Author: Marissa Meyer
Publication Date: 2011
Publisher: Tor.com (read for free HERE)

Glitches is a prequel story set before Cinder. It shows how Cinder was first adopted by the Linh family and her first days after waking up from her cyborg surgeries. We meet the familiar characters from the Linh family, including Garan (Cinder’s stepfather) before he passed away. Cinder tries her best to fit into the family but is constantly reminded by how different she is from them. We see Peony’s acceptance of Cinder and also Adri and Pearl’s dislike of her from the beginning and how that will carry into the first book. This is a short read that gives us a bit more insight into the Linh family and Cinder slowly adapting to being a cyborg.

Title: The Queen’s Army (Lunar Chronicles, #1.5)
Author: Marissa Meyer
Publication Date: 2012
Publisher: Tor.com (read for free HERE)

We finally get to see a little of what life is like on the Moon under the rule of Queen Levana. We are introduced to Ze’ev (Z) who has been chosen to join a special unit of the Queen’s army. He and others undergo modifications with that of a wolf and are then are put together in packs to train. From the beginning we see that Z is different from the others—he has a more compassionate side and never truly lets the wolf in him take over.

I would love to see more of what life is like on the Moon and how cruel/brutal Levana has made it. I would suggest reading Scarlet before reading this one as there are some spoilers about a certain new character.

  1. "I would love to see more of what life is like on the Moon and how cruel/brutal Levana has made it." Yeah, me too! I hope one of the books in the Lunar Chronicles is set on the Moon.

  3. I need to read both of these Jenny, especially the Queen's Army. I can't wait for a little peek into the Levana's world and day to day life under her awful rule. Good to know this book needs to be read after Scarlet too, I'm guessing I know what spoiler you're talking about and that would be a bummer for anyone who hadn't yet met Wolf:)
